Efficient Changeover of Roll Form Tooling
Author: Tim Nahm, Project Manager

Everyone’s heard the saying “time is money.”  This applies to changeovers on your tube, pipe and roll forming mills.  When the line is down during changeovers and setups, you are not producing sellable parts so it makes sense to minimize this downtime as much as possible.  For those that do not have rafted mills or mills with some type of automated changeover system, click here to learn five things to consider.

Symptoms

During the roll forming of stainless steel 409m, 10 mm thick, the problem of cracking at radius was found. Another problem is of material pick up by rolls which gives marking on profiles. Please suggest precautions in forming the hat & Z profiles.

Medicine

When changing the forming process from coil to pre-cut blanks, typically we add 1/3rd more passes. We would add two (2) feed passes to hold the material from walking back and forth. We would also add a few more forming passes to slow down the forming progression (this helps the material from taking a big hit when entering the next pass). Depending on the profile, we would also add a double finisher so we would have a pull-out pass. Sometimes, if necessary, we would add flat guides between passes to hold the material flat as possible when forming the material from pass to pass. This helps to stabilize the profile as it is being formed.
